There are advanced
countries in Asia such as Japan, China, and South Korea. They have a high quality
university with increasing competence of students. So they have a high ability
to fight in the world class competition. Maybe this is the reason why ITS (Institut
Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember) must be world-class university as good as them.
Become a world class university
is aim precious for a better Indonesia. However, it needs make hard effort to
achieve it, especially from the internal of ITS. I think, the first action to
do is equalization perception of ITS people about the importance to be a
world-class university. Because I think, ITS is like a team. Equalization
perception of the team is the first step before we want to do the program. When
the perception of ITS people is equal, it will create an awareness and
motivation collectively for fighting to realize the dream together.
Not only
internalization, but also ITS needs improve the english ability, especially
communication site. ITS have a good position in Indonesia. It is in fourth of best
University in Indonesia, but there are many students who don’t have a good
skill in English. English language test results of new students in 2010 show
that there is less than 10% of students who do not get the standard points, 477,
in CLC (Centre for Language and Cultures). If we have a high quality to speak in
English, we will be an extraordinary system, we will be able to discuss,
exchange ideas, and give each other information about science and technology
with other students in the world. So that, the university people should be able
to communicate and make a good relation with other world class university to be
diplomacy and friendship.
Other internal factor
that must be considered is the surveillance of the method learned in class. As
we know, ITS is applying SLC (Student Learning Center) method which is the method
that focuses on achieving the competence of students with more involving
students in the process of teaching and learning. Using this method, the
students will get the opportunity and motivation to build their own knowledge
with themselves, so that they will gain a deep understanding. In this method,
the lecturer was not only required capable of conveying the subject matter lonely,
but also he has the ability to facilitate the student's learning needs,
motivating, inspiring, and to be an evaluator.
But in the fact, this
method has not run with our expectations. There are still many found that the
lecturer teach by conventional method means that lecturers deliver subject
matter, then the students record and memorize lessons as there is in the
textbook. Therefore, the SLC method must be supervised in earnest. There is supervision
by using questionnaire in the end of the semester, but it was not enough. I
suggest, we need make a team of supervisors. This supervisors team who is
responsible with the process of SCL method.
The team supervisor must visit the class with an unknown interval of
visits by lecturer or in other words ' suddenly inspection '. In the class, the
supervisor team can ask directly to the students about the lecturer has been
teaching with the SLC method or not.
Maybe ITS have other
internal problem to be a world class university. But, beside that, I have a
suggestion for the officers of the university. Insya'allah, this step can accelerate the process of ITS becoming a
world-class university. My suggestion
is the internship program at the university of the international standard for
campus officials, ranging from professors, to the chair of the department or
other people in ITS. With this internship program, I hope, all of them in ITS can
learn and feel directly how to become a world-class University. Then, the
knowledge which we got from it, we can apply directly to be world-class
university.
The Declaration that
has been told by the authorities of ITS to become a world-class University, we
must support fully, because it makes a world-class University that is similar
to the advance of the nation. To be world-class university, ITS must have
treatment for increasing the quality of ITS people. There will a high quality
human in a high quality university. Human resources are created in this world
class university who can adapt and compete in the global competition for the
sake of national progress.
Being world class
university will be given benefit and importance for our nation right now, then
it should not be seen as just a dream. Take it as a challenge to the attainment
of measurable time. Because if we assume, it is the challenge, the spirit that
is issued will be maximum. Everyday it will also be decorated with action as
well as the contribution in order to make it happen.
